Directly translating to ‘clean’, SKOON Skincare captures the essence of minimalism and simplicity. The skincare range, which includes cleansers, moisturisers, concentrates and serums, was founded in Cape Town on the basis of honest and environmentally-conscious production. Exquisitely packaged and easy to use, SKOON is gentle, effective and kind to skin.
SKOON was founded by South African engineer, Stella Ciolli. “The SKOON brand began because of an article I found in a newspaper years ago, which stated that a woman will host, on average, 515 ingredients on her body, at any given time – because of the way modern cosmetics are formulated,” notes Stella. “It occurred to me that there are very few “good” alternatives – and if I wanted to make a difference, I’d have to roll up my sleeves and make something happen. We just had to get this project off the ground.”
SKOON products are toxin-free, contain no parabens and are not tested on animals. SKOON is a natural skincare collection which uses the best-in-class non-toxic ingredients in scientifically formulated combinations. “We do not accept that good, effective skincare needs to contain parabens or any toxic ingredients procured at great expense to the environment, and at the expense of women’s health and well-being,” explains Stella. “We don’t condone formulations that might be carcinogenic or harmful to your health. Where possible, we source locally and encourage local production of raw ingredients. We also reject, in the strongest terms, the idea of testing on animals.”
SKOON products all contain a variety of pure plant oils, rich nut butters, exquisite floral essences and botanical extracts sourced from all over the world. There is no right or wrong way to use SKOON products and herein lies the beauty -users can play around with products within the range to create a skincare regime which works for them. With a variety of ranges aimed at specific skin types, including oily, dry and combination skin, the SKOON range caters to all, regardless of whether skin improvement or simply maintenance is desired.
Stella explains that it has been an interesting journey since the inception of SKOON. “It’s been a fascinating journey, with many twists and bends in the road, including an interesting juncture, in 2016. This was when I managed to convince my sister Elise du Plessis and her daughter Emma to join me in my business. It was clearly becoming a bigger challenge than I’d ever imagined, and needing a lot more resources than our small, original start-up team. To be honest, I was quite overwhelmed by the groundswell of interest in skincare made with consciousness. The business had to grow.”
In essence, SKOON has kindness and gentleness at the core of its being. If you’re in the market for a new skincare brand, or are just interested in trying something different -SKOON won’t disappoint. Those who use the products swear by it, and with exceptional results, it’s not hard to see why so many users keep coming back.
